Herring Gull
Herring gulls are a common sight around fishing ports and coastal towns.

 Bird SilhouetteA common sight around Scottish fishing boats, the largest colony on NTS property is on Murray’s Isles in the Solway.

Food: Predator, scavenger and pirate taking almost anything.

Nest Site: Rocky coasts, salt marshes, fields, rocky islands, islets and a variety of buildings.  Mound of vegetation with cup lined with finer material.

Breeding: Mid April to mid June where 3 eggs are laid.

Wintering: resident or dispersive to a varying degree.

Distribution: UK, southern Ireland, southern Europe, Faeroes, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
