Lesser Black Backed Gull
Closely related to the Herring Gull, it can be distinguished by its darker back.

 Bird SilhouetteA common sight around Scottish fishing boats, the largest colony on NTS property is on Murray’s Isles in the Solway.

Food: Vertebrates and invertebrates, plant material and rubbish and fish at sea by surface plunging and surface diving.

Nest Site: Islets in freshwater lochs, short vegetation preferred, sand dunes, moorlands sometimes in deep heather.  Nest on ground either open or partly hidden; material include seaweed, grasses and other vegetation lined with finer material.

Breeding: May to mid June where 3 eggs are laid.

Wintering: Portugal, south-west Spain, north west Africa, and Bay of Biscay.

Distribution: UK, southern Ireland, Faeroes, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Russia.
