Ungainly on land, storm petrels spend most of their lives at sea.

 Bird SilhouetteAnother underground nester, this species prefers piles of boulders and dry-stone walls.

Found on St Kilda and Staffa, the largest colonies in Scotland are at Treshnish, Priest Island and Mousa, where they inhabit a ruined broch.

Food: Crustaceans, small fish, cephalopods taken on the surface, carcases of whales and ship’s garbage.

Nest Site: Arrives at nest site in darkness to undisturbed islands, islets.  Nests in rocky outcrops, crevices, in walls, ruins, burrows and boulder beach.

Breeding: Late May to mid June where one egg is laid.

Wintering: Winters off of South Africa.

Distribution: Mainly Scotland and west coast Ireland, northern and southern Europe.

St Kilda

St Kilda
The largest colony of Eurpoean Storm Petrels on NTS property is in the St Kilda archipelago. They often nest in the stone walls of cleits.
