Some 90 % of the European population of this species breeds on St Kilda, the only other significant colonies being on the Flannan Islands and North Rona.
Recently developed counting techniques have shown that the population has dropped by 45% in four years due, it is feared, to predation by Great Skuas.
Food: Platonic crustaceans, molluscs, small fish and fish offal, taken from the surface while skimming or hovering. Rarely lands on the sea.
Nest Site: In piles of stones, burrows either in a bare depression of nest material consisting of twigs, grass stems and leaves.
Breeding: Mid May to mid August where one egg is laid.
Wintering: Tropics.
Distribution: North Scotland, Faeroes, Norway. Main populations are in the western Atlantic.
