As it nests underground and only comes ashore at night, colonies are easy to overlook.
The strange calls emanating from underground at the UK’s largest colony on Rum may have given rise to the name of the mountain on which it is situated – Trollival.
The nearby colony of 1500 pairs on Canna is now extinct, though there is still a large colony on St Kilda.
Food: Small fish, cephalopods, either picked from the surface or by plunge diving.
Nest Site: Breeds in burrows on inshore islands and visits nests only under darkness. Also uses crevices in rock or under boulders.
Breeding: April to July and lays one egg.
Wintering: Movements differ of different populations: large concentrations are found of South America.
Distribution: UK, Ireland, southern Europe and Iceland.
