Smaller and sleeker than the Great Skua, they are nonetheless piratical in their habits.

 Bird SilhouetteAs its name implies, a northern species, with colonies on Fair Isle and Unst. A small number also nest on St Kilda


Food: Kleptoparasitic – stealing food from other birds, but also preys on invertebrates, birds and small mammals. Nest season appears to be synchronized with Puffin so that chicks hatch at the same time Puffins are taking food to the nest to feed young.

Nest Site: Nests on moorlands, saltmarshes, near fresh water pools preferring dry nest-sites.  Shallow depression made in vegetation and area defended against other Skuas and mammals including humans.

Breeding: Mid-May to mid-June where 2 eggs are laid.

Wintering: Passage through North Sea, English Channel, western Norway, Demark, West Germany, and Belgium.

Distribution: North and west Scotland, Iceland, Norway, Bear island, Jan Mayen, Finland, Sweden, Russia.
