STATUS REPORT 5

Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th October 2005

          WMIL

The mice capture work continues by two Edinburgh Zoo and/or Wildlife Park staff. Both Gareth and Fraser left for a weekend off on Saturday 8th October. Fraser is returning later in the coming week. At the same time 24 mice were also taken off the island to Edinburgh Zoo. Two mice remain on Canna which are being checked by the WMIL team. There have been 82 mice caught in total. Two live rats have also been caught by the mice team, and these are being kept by the WMIL team for use by media (and the rats will be humanely destroyed at a later date). Rat trapping also continues. To date 27 rats have been caught. The trap sets have now been set around Tighard.

Establishing the bait station grid continues. Over 3970 stations have been put out to date. With the exception of the steeper areas and/or rope access areas, the entire island has now been completed. Numbering the bait station grid has also begun – with the in-bye land, Compass Hill, Coroghon coast, Tarbert Road and Parks and South-eastern slopes completed to date.

The weather was much improved this week, with no days lost. One afternoon was taken off to support the local fundraising lunch for the Canna School (Adventure Playground).  The delivery of the bait has been delayed and it is now due into Liverpool on 17th October, and should be delivered to Canna by 26th October.

NTS volunteers – Richard Bakere and Rebecca Price arrived on Monday 3rd October and John McTague departed on Wednesday 5th October.
