STATUS REPORT 10

Monday 7th to Sunday 13th November 2005

         WMIL

The first bait check was completed over three days (Monday to Wednesday).  The bait take by rats is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1. Bait take by rats during the first baiting on Canna.

The second bait check began on Thursday 10th November, but severe gales and torrential rain (“dangerous conditions” as stated by the BBS radio weather forecasters) meant it was delayed over several days.  It is due to be completed over the following week.

Unfortunately the cattle on the island are still eating the plastic numbered tags and kicking up bait stations in certain areas.  These sites are being checked and the tags are being placed underneath the stations.  Bait is going to be wired into the stations in any cattle area.  Cattle will be staying in the present areas for most of the winter.  Sheep, goats and ponies continue to ignore the stations.

The weather deteriorated this week with two days being lost due to severe gales and torrential rain (the Calmac Ferry was cancelled on Saturday 12th November). Assistance was given to Gerry Mackinnon with rescuing a cow that had fallen down a small cliff on Sanday to the beach platform.  It was recovered safe and sound.

Sarah Stevens (all NTS volunteers) arrived Tuesday 8th November.  Suzi Hogg departed on Tuesday 8th November.
