STATUS REPORT 37

Monday 30th October to Sunday 5th November 2006

A rodent motel

The team have been busy constructing rodent motels on wet days. These will be placed in each building on the island. The hope is that any surviving rat, or re-colonising rat, will seek out a safe refuge, such as these boxes. Traps will be placed in the box which will result in the death of the rat, thus preventing accidental re-colonisation of the island.

Continued monitoring at the "summer reported rat sighting areas" has shown no rat sign or activity. Checking all the monitoring in the bait stations has been completed on Sanday, and at Lamasgor, In-Bye (including Canna House), Garrisdale, Iola Sgor, Compass Hill, Water-tanks, Terraces, Geugasgor, Sloc, Tarbert Road, Tarbert Paddocks, East Plateaus and Coroghon. No rat sign has been detected. Monitoring outside the bait stations has been checked at Sanday, Lamasgor, In-Bye (including Canna House), Compass Hill, Garrisdale, Iola Sgor, Water-tanks, Terraces, Tarbert Road, Geugasgor, Sloc, Coroghon, Tarbert Paddocks and East Plateau. No rat sign has been detected.

Weather has been good, with only one day lost to bad conditions. This day was used to take surplus bait to the pier in preparation for transportation to the Falkland Islands. Pallets were also collected and cut to size, more "rodent motels" made and chocolate wax blocks made. Monitoring equipment, mainly chocolate wax, is also being made in small batches most days after regular field work.

Hinges and screws have been ordered and these will be used to construct more "motels" which will be placed in buildings as soon as they are completed.

NTS Volunteer, Gareth Marshall, arrived on Saturday 4th November.

The team joined the community at the school’s Halloween party on 31st October and made a bonfire for the Guy Fawkes gathering on 5th November.
