SEABIRD SPECIES LIST FOR 2005

RED THROATED DIVER     Gavia stellata

At sea, 6 on 20/11

 

BLACK THROATED DIVER     Gavia arctica

At sea, singles on 10/9 and 6/11

 

FULMAR     Fulmarus glacialis

Population count = 158 apparently occupied sites.  Only 6 chicks known to have fledged from the whole colony.  First egg seen on 31/5, first chick on 10/7, first fledgeling on 31/8

 

MANX SHEARWATER     Puffinus puffinus

At sea, 6 on 30/7 and 2 on 10/9 were the only records received

 

GANNET     Morus bassana

Seen frequently in most months

 

CORMORANT     Phalacrocorax carbo

Seen most months, flying past in small numbers

 

SHAG     Phalacrocorax aristotelis

A total of 131 apparently occupied nests was only around a third of last years total with a poor mean productivity of 0.29 young fledged per active nest, the lowest value since monitoring began in 1990.  Nesting was very late with first observed egg not until 7/5, first observed chick on 11/6.  High chick mortality after heavy rain in July.

Single off Black Gable on 19/11 (second record for Reserve)

 

POMARINE SKUA     Stercorarius pomarinus

Single on 12/10 was the only record

 

ARCTIC SKUA     Stercorarius parasiticus

May – single on 11th; July – 4 on 24th, single on 30th; Aug – single on 22nd; Sep – 2 on 6th, 4 on 10th

 

LONG TAILED SKUA     Stercorarius longicaudus

Single on 12/10

 

GREAT SKUA     Stercorarius skua

1 on 9/6, 4 on 30/7, 1 on 31/7, 1 on 10/9

 

LITTLE GULL     Larus minutus

1 on 6/11

 

HERRING GULL     Larus argentatus

157 apparently occupied nests.  First eggs seen on 2/5, first chick on 6/6

 

GREAT BLACK BACKED GULL     Larus marinus

Pair nested on Wuddy Rocks again raising a single chick

 

KITTIWAKE     Rissa tridactyla

First birds offshore on 18/3, some on ledges 19/3.  7,239 apparently occupied nests was an improvement on last year’s low count.  Mean productivity of 0.88 young per AON was well above average.  Another late breeding season with first egg seen on 3/6, chick on 28/6, fledgling on 4/8, though there were still some juv birds at nest sites as late as 31/8

 

GUILLEMOT    Uria aalge

Numbers on monitoring plots increased by 19% compared to 2004.  Birds late getting started – irregular throughout April and still only thinly spread in early May.  First known egg on 7/5, chick on 7/6, fledgeling on 3/7

 

RAZORBILL     Alca torda

Numbers on monitoring plots increased by 19% compared to 2004.  Productivity was on the low side at 0.48 chicks per active nest

‘Small numbers’ off Pettico Wick on 26/2, 1 on 20/11

 

PUFFIN     Fratercula arctica

Peak June count was 30 ashore on 21st
